    I cannot help you there.

It's not what you're looking for, but I love the Dahab Hotel in downtown Cairo.

The rooms are small, basic and cheap. But there is a great open rooftop area where you can hang out and meet other travelers. I met tons of interesting people there, from war correspondents to belly dancers and arabic language students.

Check out hostelworld.com and see what you find. Here are the Cairo listings:

I once had an apartment in the Zamalek area. You can rent them short-term. There are two ways to do this:

          1. go through a broker (simsaar) and for a fee they will show you available apartments. This way will likely be faster but costlier.

          2. wander through the areas you like and strike up conversations with the bowwab (doorman) of the building and ask him to show you the available flats or to meet the landlord. This can take more time, of course, but this is what worked for me.

How's your Arabic? What areas are you looking at? If you decide this might be an option for you, feel free to let me know....I've some advice about leases and such.....

          Good luck!

            Cass:

Did you rent it by yourself, or were you with a man?

My female friends had a lot of trouble renting an apartment.

Though in Zamalek there are lots of foreigners, and so it's easier than other areas.

I rented with another female, actually. And yes, Zamalek and maybe Ma'adi are easier areas to tackle than others might be. Speaking some Arabic helped, too. : )
